Emma Sonberg’s Low-Sugar Electrolyte Water – Trail Tested and Approved
Hydration is one of the most critical aspects of hiking, directly impacting performance, safety, and overall enjoyment of the trail.
When hiking, your body loses water through sweat, respiration, and exertion, especially in warm or high-altitude environments. Without proper hydration, your body struggles to regulate temperature, maintain energy levels, and transport nutrients efficiently, increasing the risk of fatigue, dizziness, muscle cramps, and heat-related illnesses like heat exhaustion or heatstroke.
Proper hydration isn’t just about drinking water during the hike…
….it starts before you set out. Drinking water before hitting the trail ensures you begin hydrated. While hiking, sip water consistently rather than waiting until you feel thirsty, as thirst is a late indicator of dehydration.
After miles on the trail or a day soaking up the sun, staying hydrated is everything. My Low-Sugar Electrolyte Water is my backpacking and hiking essential — simple to make, light to carry, and way better for you than sugary sports drinks. It keeps me refreshed on long hikes and helps me recover faster when the campfire finally calls.
You’ll Need:
- 1 liter water
- ⅛ tsp sea salt — I love using Okinawa Sea Salt for its clean, mineral-rich taste (you can find it on Amazon). Under that, the best alternatives would be pink sea salt, followed by standard sea salt.
- 1 tbsp lemon or lime juice for a bright, natural flavor
- ½ tsp honey or stevia (optional, just enough for a hint of sweetness)
How to Make It:
- Mix everything together in your water bottle, canteen or camp cup until dissolved.
- Chill in a cooler (if you have access to running water, this can act as your fridge) or sip it straight — it’s refreshing either way.
Why It’s Great for Backpacking or Hiking:
- Rehydrates Faster: The electrolytes help your body absorb water more efficiently after long hikes or sweaty climbs.
- Replaces Lost Minerals: Replenishes sodium and potassium to prevent fatigue, dizziness, or muscle cramps.
- Reduces Fatigue and Headaches: Keeps your brain clear and your body balanced so you can enjoy every sunrise, summit, and campfire story.
The cost is a fraction of purchasing so called “energy drinks”, and made from pure ingredients. Best part is that if you are filtering your own water along the trail, you can pack the ingredients without contributing at all to your overall pack weight.
This is the drink I always pack for my outdoor adventures — light, healthy, and perfectly refreshing after a hard day on the trail.
